In the history of film, there have been few villains more instantly recognizable than Darth Vader. The black plastic samurai mask and spooky machine breathing have been iconic symbols of the character since 1977 that everyone knows and loves. More than coveted than these things, however, is the Darth lightsaber. Every kid in the world wanted one as soon as they saw the epic duel with Obi Wan Kenobi.
Now, Hasbro has released a new line of replicas under the series name “Force FX Lightsabers”. These are faithful re-creations of the props from the movies, attempting to re-create in as much detail as possible the originals. Of the set, many have chosen the Darth lightsaber as their favorite.
This is one of those rare replicas that truly feel like owning a piece of movie history. The design is based on the original design of the Darth lightsaber from the 1977 Star Wars: A New Hope. The hilt is made of die-cast metal and not only looks like the real thing, but feels like it too. The molds for this were originally created by Master Replicas, who build collectibles hardcore fans the world over respect and admire.
In taking over the toy line Hasbro has kept all of the original molds, as well as maintaining the official status of a licensed collectible approved and endorsed by Lucas film Ltd. As a licensed collectible, however, it is officially not listed as a toy. Since it is possible to break it under severe conditions, and the broken pieces a choking hazard, it is not recommended for children under 12.
In order to make the Darth lightsaber as sturdy as possible they’ve made the blade and hilt one piece, rather than make them removable. While it isn’t officially recommended that you hit anyone or anything with this thing, the fact is that the sturdy design has allowed people to run around doing mock lightsaber fights without too much worry of damaging the product.
They’ve done a great job capturing the sound effects from the movie. Powering up the Darth Vader lightsaber gives that great electrical charging sound everyone remembers, followed by the hum of energy hanging in the air. The swinging sound varies depending on how hard you swing it, and the clashing sound effects also vary depending on how long you’re in contact with another object. When you switch it off, the collapsing sound effect plays right on cue.
The swinging sound effects are tuned to work in concert with three built-in motion sensors. Two of them detect your movements, building suspense for the moment when the third sensor detects that you’ve hit something and plays the collision sound. The best part about all of the sounds is that they fulfill your expectations; the swinging sounds play when you expect them to, the clashing sounds hit their cues just right, and there’s nothing random our out of control about any of it.
